Our adult pottery course covers all the basic techniques on the wheel and hand building such as coiling, slab methods, thrown pots and sculpting in clay. Various decorative techniques, including sgraffito, slip-painting, under glazing and glazing are taught. The course concentrates on three-dimensional art – sculpture and pot-making, with an emphasis on technical skills development and artistic exploration. Classes are designed to be relaxing and fun, without the pressure of academic qualifications, but with all the support and educational guidance needed to develop good work and gain skills and experience with clay. Students are encouraged to experiment and to develop their own styles and techniques. For those with experience in ceramics, we can expand and develop your skills, sharing hints and tips for throwing or glazing and experimenting with new materials – paper clay, porcelain, engobes and on-glaze enamels. Whatever your prior level of experience is Open Arts aims to tailor the course to your needs.

Experience an ancient craft that predates pottery and even stone-carving. All cultures have used basketry to store food, goods, and even water when the natural materials are woven or stitched tightly enough. The Seminole Native American Tribe developed in Florida used pine needles gathered from beneath pine trees to form their baskets. They stitched the rows of gathered needles using a coiling technique with various decorations and patterns. This 6-week session includes learning how to gather and sort through pine needles as you prepare them for cleaning and soaking. You will learn how to begin the coiled base, then choose from a variety of threads, stitch patterns, and added decorations to form the walls of your basket. You will also learn how to create a lid that perfectly fits your unique basket. All supplies are prepared and included in the price.
Students will follow a hands-on approach to learning, in which they execute various dished and baked goods from start to finish, following instruction from local and in house chefs. Six week session meets once a week. Each class is 2.5 hours long, and covers new lessons and recipes each week. All culinary classes will cover the basics of using kitchen utensils, such as the proper way to measure, pour, cut, slice, stir, melt and peel. Classes will also cover kitchen and food safety, as well as basic cooking and dining etiquette. At the end of each class, students will enjoy eating their creations together as they discuss and reflect on the process they just completed.
*all cooking classes will run when at least 6 students are registered

Weaving on a loom, Macrame, and soap felting are three fiber arts that will be explored in this 6-week session. We will use a variety of materials that include yarn, cord, and natural wool roving. You will complete 3 works of art, the first being a decorative patterned tapestry woven on a loom. The second artwork is a macrame hanging created by using different knots. The third is a bar of wool-felted lavender or plain soap.
