Six Week Session Classes
Our adult pottery course covers all the basic techniques on the wheel and hand building such as coiling, slab methods, thrown pots and sculpting. Various decorative techniques, including sgraffito, slip-painting, under glazing and glazing are also taught. The course concentrates on three-dimensional art – sculpture and pot-making, with an emphasis on technical skills development and artistic exploration. Classes are designed to be relaxing and fun, without the pressure of academic qualifications, yet with all the supported educational guidance needed to develop good work and gain skills. Students are encouraged to experiment and to develop their own styles and techniques. For those with experience in ceramics, we can expand and develop your skills, sharing hints and tips for throwing or glazing and experimenting with new materials – paper clay, porcelain, engobes and on-glaze enamels. Whatever your prior level of experience is Open Arts aims to enhance your skills. Classes run for six weeks and follow a work flow pattern:
WK 1 wheel throw and hand build
WK 2 trimming, throwing/hand building
WK 3 glaze bisque pieces/throwing
WK 4 throwing mugs and other shapes
WK 5 trimming, handles and spouts, slip décor, etching and under glazing
WK 6 final glazing.
All classes include one 25lb bag of clay, studio equipment, glazes and firings. Studio equipment includes Slab roller, Wheels, wedging table, access to many slump molds and hump molds, Extruder and more. We recommend purchasing your own tool kit.
Open Studio hours are available to students that would like more time with their pieces and is included in the class price. There is more information about Open Studio Hours below.

Open Studio at OAS
Open Studio hours are available to all adult students enrolled in the current Session. Students are allowed 2 hours of studio hours per week. Studio hours do not accumulate over the session - it's a use it or loose it extra that we cannot guarantee based on current staffing and large class sizes. Hours will be updated as we move through the session. Studio Hours are to be scheduled in person with the front desk while you are here or you may call in to be put on the Open Studio schedule. It is not an option to add more studio hours to make up a missed class.
