Open Arts Studio was opened by John and Lucy Armstrong in the summer of 2004. They had spent a long time searching for a way to bring art and education to their community, and they settled on an art school for children, where the youth of the community could learn the beauty of Drawing, Painting, Pottery, and Music. Over time, their small school evolved into a community staple, allowing them to expand to new classes, new arts, and new horizons. Open Arts Studio was able to add sewing, beading, and cooking for children, and an array of arts education programs for adults.

Thanks to that same wonderful community that Open Arts set out to serve, John and Lucy have been in business for over two decades, and they are still looking for fun ways to continue to improve what they offer to Tacoma.
