Raku
Experience first-hand the fiery delight of this ancient ceramic method! Artists will learn a brief history of Raku, experiment with glaze techniques, choose from a variety of carbon transformations involving horsehair, peacock & ostrich feathers, and behold the alluring effects of the reduction chambers.
Work that exceeds SEVEN SQUARE INCHES will not be fired without the express permission of the instructor. There is limited space available and many pieces to fire. Three rounds of firing will accommodate the afore mentioned size of eight or more participant's work.
Artists who do not bring their own bisqueware (clay work that has been fired to cone 04) to the event will have the option to purchase bisqueware at the event.
RAKU IS NOT FOOD SAFE . The item should be used for decorative purposes.
It is common for raku pieces to crack or break while undergoing the thermal shock of this process. Should this happen, refunds will not be issued . Enjoy the process and the overall unique experience that this event provides.
Participants will be working near extreme temperatures exceeding 1800 degrees Fahrenheit and paper & wood smoke. We recommend considering the following safety advice:
-CLOSED TOED SHOES
-Clothes low in or lacking plastics such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic (no athletic ware such as yoga pants, tights, spandex etc.) Despite the warm days, we recommend covering your skin if working near the kiln and chambers.
-No loose clothing
-Hair should be pulled back
-Hats will help shield you from ash and soot debris from the reduction chambers
-Plastic goggles will help protect your eyes from smoke (OAS will have four pair to share with attendees)
By Registering to OAS sessions class you agree to the following policies and release statement:
Tuition & Refunds: Tuition must be paid when registration is turned in. We cannot hold a space without payment. You may cancel at any time up to two weeks before the class begins & receive a refund minus a $30 processing fee. Student can receive a partial refund if they choose to withdraw immediately following the first class (same day). No refunds will be issued after that date.
Missed/Cancelled Classes: If an instructor must cancel class due to emergency and a substitute is not available, the class will be canceled and a make-up class will be rescheduled. Please call the studio if you are going to be absent. Student absences will not be reimbursed and cannot be credited toward future classes. Make-ups will not be permitted for 'no shows' and class fees will not be refunded or credited. OAS cannot guarantee make ups. If you have an excused absence and we have space in another class you may be able to make up your absence.
In the Classroom: No cell phones are permitted during class. OAS is not responsible for damaged clothing or property. Dress appropriately! Please arrive at the studio a few minutes prior to class as late arrivals cause distraction and reduce the 1:1 time instructors have with each student. OAS may take your child off premises for the purpose of break-time or part of the lesson. They will be well supervised and the release of liability applies during this time. Open Arts Studio has permission to photograph students and their artwork for use in print and online promotion.
Behavior: Respectful behavior is expected at all times. Students who prove to be a continual distraction to the class, after repeated attempts by the instructor to refocus them, will be dismissed from the class for the day. If the students unacceptable behavior continues, they will not be allowed to return to the studio on the discretion of the OAS staff. Any remaining tuition is non-refundable.
Liability & Emergencies: I hereby release Open Arts Studio from liability of any injury my child or I may suffer as the result of participation in the program. I acknowledge that my child will not be released from the studio by themselves or with anyone other than authorized persons. I give permission to see that my minor child receives medical treatment in an emergency.
